  • Crossrail Tunnelling: TBM Ellie breaks through at Stepney Green

    Crossrail Project Manager Peter Main gives an overview of the work involved and challenges the tunnelling team faced during TBM Ellie's 2.7km journey from Pudding Mill Lane to Stepney Green. The breakthrough marks the structural completion of tunnels for Crossrail's north east spur, between Whitechapel and Pudding Mill Lane. It has taken Ellie just over three months to complete the 2.7km journey, travelling as much as 72m in a 24 hour period.

  • Crossrail: Constructing our underground caverns in Stepney Green

    Crossrail has marked another major milestone this week with the completion of the westbound cavern 40m below ground in Stepney Green, just 3 months after eastbound cavern completion earlier this year. The Stepney Green caverns are some of the largest mined caverns ever constructed in Europe using a tunnelling technique called Spray Concrete Lining. They are 50m long, 15m wide and 17m high.
