Unbuild Better: A case study in deconstruction
AAP's Felix Heisel, supported by an Einhorn Center grant, is leading a team in the deconstruction of one of 11 houses being removed to make way for the Catherine Commons development in Collegetown. The project is a local case study promoting a more sustainable ("circular economy") approach to building materials, and is expected to inform a proposed local ordnance that, if enacted, would make Ithaca one of a small number of U.S. cities requiring deconstruction for certain buildings.

There are approximately 2 billion tons of extremely useful metals produced each year but their production is associated with the emission of large amounts of greenhouse gases and pollutants. The lecture is about pathways for the sustainable use of structural metals, with reduced carbon-dioxide emissions, recycling, scrap-compatible alloy design, contaminant-tolerance of alloys and improved alloy longevity. Also discussed is the efficacy and technological readiness of individual measures.
