What role does Revit play in integrating facility management with BIM for lifecycle building operations?

Revit acts as a bridge between design intent and facility performance, it’s the foundation for creating data-rich models that drive BIM-enabled facility management(FM). During design and construction, Revit captures geometry and embedded metadata (equipment IDs, material specs, maintenance data, serial numbers, etc.) that later become invaluable for FM teams. Once the project moves to the operations phase, this model transitions into a digital twin, an as built Revit model connected to CAFM or IWMS platforms like Archibus, Planon, or FM:Systems. This integration allows facility managers to visualize spaces, track assets, schedule maintenance, and optimize energy performance directly from the model. Essentially, Revit ensures that the building doesn’t stop evolving after handover, it becomes a live, intelligent database supporting the entire lifecycle. The payoff? Lower operational costs, smarter maintenance, and extended asset life through data-driven insights.
