What is the view on the current availability topics affecting the construction industry?

The end to end supply chain is killing each other to hit dates that are unrealistic due to massive shortages across all facets of the built environment. A building is a massive jig saw puzzle and if there are pieces missing the picture cannot be completed. This needs to acknowledged at a construction management level and managed accordingly

Whilst the current (hopefully fairly short lived) well documented shortages of certain materials and labour are hitting certain projects hard, it is worth looking at some of the larger strategic issues that often impact these shortages, namely
1. Project delivery consistency -The industry still continues to feel a large impact form project timeline movements whether at the planning stage or in construction.
2. Project management - Is sufficient attention paid to close management and tracking the whole supply chain from individual components to completed elements reading for shipment to site.
3. Sourcing - During project design and procurement phases is sufficient attention paid to and detail requested on the component sourcing and its potential impact and risks to the overall programme.
4. Risk assessment - often a very small component and often one that isn't considered critical, such as clips at the ends of modular wiring not being available can cause a critical delay greater than the elements where focus was placed such as curtain walling.
5. Other industry skills - Will the successful MMC manufacturers be the ones who manage the whole jigsaw using skills learnt in say the car industry? Though recent chip shortages show how even a well managed supply chain can be impacted.
Overall though I believe relationships between suppliers and installers cannot be overlooked as these usually lead to good communication.
